Call for Papers

I-CiTies 2026 - 12th CINI Annual Conference on ICT for Smart Cities & Communities

Conference Topics

The twelfth edition of the i-Cities conference continues its tradition of integrating key ICT technologies within a multidisciplinary approach to Smart Cities and Communities. The conference aims to bring together academia, industry, and public institutions to share and discuss research advances, innovative solutions, and real-world applications addressing urban challenges. It provides a platform to foster collaborations, exchange ideas, and explore opportunities for new projects at national and international levels. Authors are invited to submit work demonstrating practical implementations, advancing theoretical foundations, or exploring new methodologies.

This year, the conference emphasizes academic research contributions that will be discussed in scientific workshops hosted by the conference. Therefore, authors can submit extended abstracts related to either scientific contributions, which will be extended to become full papers, or preliminary works, which will only be presented through short pitches.

A dedicated €2000 funding has been secured to support the challenge that will take place during the I-Cities event. The 2026 edition will include a special session focused on the laboratory’s areas of expertise. This session will feature the presentation of a catalog describing all research and development activities carried out within the lab, prepared by a group of young researchers and PhD students.

Contributions are encouraged across a wide range of topics related to ICT-based solutions for smart cities and communities, including but not limited to:

Submissions Instructions

Researchers, practitioners, and innovators are invited to submit extended abstracts outlining their ongoing or completed projects, theoretical advancements, or new proposals. Submissions should provide enough detail to demonstrate the scientific contributions and practical relevance of the work.

We are pleased to announce that, also for 2026 edition of the conference, a selection of papers, following a new single-blind peer review process conducted after the event, will be published in the Communications in Computer and Information Science (CCIS) series by Springer.

This represents an important development for I-CiTies, aimed at further enhancing the scientific quality and dissemination of selected contributions.

Extended Abstract Submission

The extended abstract should be in PDF format, following the IEEE template available at https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html, and must not exceed 2 pages in size.

The Submission is now open and available here.

The Microsoft CMT service was used for managing the peer-reviewing process for this conference. This service was provided for free by Microsoft and they bore all expenses, including costs for Azure cloud services as well as for software development and support.

Important notes:

  • If the paper is of industrial type, please check the "Industrial Track" flag.
  • If you are interested in the extended version being published in the proceedings, please check the "Full Paper Extension" flag.
  • Please note that all authors are required to submit an extended abstract (maximum two pages) by the deadline, using the template provided on the conference website. The expression of interest in submitting a full version for publication in the proceedings is non-binding. The full version will be submitted after the conference has concluded.
  • When submitting, please indicate the track and/or the aspects of the conceptual architecture of the lab addressed by the paper as a keyword, separated by.

When submitting, please indicate the track that best matches your paper. Additionally, position your contribution about the list of topics of interest for the CINI Lab Smart Cities & Communities national lab, shown in the reference architecture below. The layers below the blue line represent the fundamental services of a potential lab platform, while the layers above the line depict the different application areas of interest.

Submitted extended abstract will undergo a review process to check their relevance to the conference.

The submission of a contribution implies that, if accepted for presentation, at least one of its proponents must register (paying the requested fee) and attend the conference for giving the presentation.

Full Paper Submission

After the conference, a selection of contributors will be invited to prepare an extended version of their abstract to be published on the Springer CCIS series. In this phase, submitted papers can be classified as follows:

  • Full papers: 12–15 pages (including references and figures)
  • Short papers: 6–11 pages (including references and figures)

All submissions must follow the official Springer CCIS / LNCS format. Instructions are available here:

More Details about full/short papers submission process will be provided after the conclusion of the extended abstract submission.
